Counseling is a developmental process, in which the counselor provides to another individual or group guidance, support, insight to help creatively manage and resolve a personal problem, achieve a goal, or identify areas of self improvement.

Counseling enables a person to sort out issues and make decisions. Often counseling is sought out at times of change or crisis.

Counseling involves talking with a person in a way that helps that person solve a problem or create conditions that will cause the person to understand and or improve his/her behavior, take responsibility for their actions, or learn coping skills.
